Intel and other gadget makers create a standards body for the Internet of Things

The Open Interconnect Consortium wants to deliver an open-source specification for wirelessly connecting devices. Atmel, Broadcom, Dell, Intel, Samsung, and Intel’s Wind River embedded-software division are some of the members aiming to accelerate the development of the Internet of things. The Internet of things is expected to consist of 212 billion devices by the year 2020, including PCs, smartphones, tablets, wearables, and a variety of home and industrial appliances, according to market researcher International Data Corp.

Chip makers and other parts of the chain must agree upon how to connect wireless devices together, creating a communications framework based on the industry standard technologies to wirelessly connect and manage the flow of data among devices. The idea is to create a communication flow, working regardless of form and factor, operating system or serivce provider.

State of the Internet: Fewer Attacks Than Previous Quarter

Akamai’s latest report shows less attacks than in the previous quarter. These are some of the key findings:

  • China was again responsible for originating the most attacks, but dropped slightly from 43% in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 41% in the first quarter of 2014.
  • The United States followed in second place, but also saw a decline from 19% to 11%.
  • Indonesia saw a slight uptick from 5.7% to 6.8% to secure third place.

Microsoft-DS remained the most targeted port in the first quarter of 2014, but the associated attack traffic volume was down to 14% of observed attack traffic (from 30% in the third quarter of 2013). The number of DDoS attacks reported in the first quarter of 2014 declined to 283 from 346 in the last quarter of 2013 — a 20% decrease quarter-over-quarter and a 27% increase year-over-year, meaning that the most regions of the world saw a decline in reported DdoS attacks during the first quarter of 2014. The enterprise sector saw a 49% quarter-over-quarter reduction in attack traffic, while public sector attack traffic grew by 34%, primarily attributable to attacks against government targets within Singapore.

Epoch, a Real-Time Visualisation Library by Fastly

Running a high performance website requires insight through metrics, which means collecting a large amount of data. Data is often untidy, slow to access, and requires analysis before meaning can be derived. Fastly’s new project offers a unique solution; Epoch is a general purpose real-time charting library for building high performance visualizations, developed for historical reporting (large data sets that only change given user interaction) and real-time monitoring (much smaller data sets and receive new data points every second).

Basically it’s a general purpose, real-time visualisation library, presenting itself in both code and basic and real-time charts. Real-time monitoring is adressed via HTML5 Canvas-based charts. Epoch is currently in open beta (0.5.1. beta).

Visit the project page on GitHub to download the library.
