Black Lotus Acquired by Level 3 in an All-Cash Transaction
Level 3 Communications, the provider of networking and communication services, has announced that it had acquired the privately held Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Mitigation Company Black Lotus to further improve its web security portfolio and DDoS mitigation capabilities. The addition of Black Lotus to Level 3’s portfolio should improve its DDoS mitigation capability by adding extra scrubbing centers, as well as enhance Level 3’s solution by adding new features like proxy-based DDoS mitigation for better protection against application layer threats and other advanced behavioral analytics. The amount of the transaction has not been disclosed yet.

PlayStation Network down again, according to Sony
Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Network is experiencing connectivity problems. This is preventing gamers from playing online multiplayer releases like Destiny and Call of Duty. Additionally, Sony’s PlayStation Store is also offline. This is also the first day that Sony has offered its “free” PlayStation Plus games for July, and it’s possible that gamers are slamming the network trying to download those goods. Currently, PSN is back up and running, but this isn’t the first PSN outage.

IBM announces tiny 7-nanometer chips
IBM has created the fist 7-nanometer chip. This means that the miniaturized electronics are so small that transistors on the chips are only 7 billionth of a meter in length. That’s 1,400 times smaller than a human hair. IBM said that its systems business will continue to use the most advanced semiconductors based on IBM research innovations, but those chips will now likely be manufactured by GlobalFoundries. IBM said researchers feared that 7-nanometer chips would be out of reach due to fundamental barriers of technology. Some of the benefits include higher performance, lower cost and lower power requirements.

CDNetworks Unveils its Cloud Security 2.0 Solution Suite
CDNetworks, the provider of CDN with network infrastructure across six continents and local expertise in mainland China, has announced the launch of it’s latest offering, the loud Security Solution suite with an integrated Web Application Firewall (WAF) as well as DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attack mitigation services. The company has already been providing DDoS mitigation solutions since 2013, but the latest solution will leverage the latest WAF technology and CDNetworks’ global CDN to protect customers from attacks at the application layer.

Apple opens iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan betas to the public
Apple has made the beta versions of both its OS El Capitan and iOS 9 operating systems to preview by the public. Both betas can be accessed at the Apple developers site. Until now the previews were available only to developers. The new iOS 9 adds some under-the-hood fixes for stability, performance, and privacy, as well as a much smarter personal assistant in Siri. It also features a new News app. iOS 9 beta testers may experience some instability and bugs. Apple is providing a FAQ page containing information on how to roll back to iOS 8.4 if need be. Apple has said that the betas are not necessarily the final versions of the OS’s. Some features and interface features could still move around.
